AMD cpu on Socket AM3 motherboards
In recent days we have on several occasions had the opportunity to talk about the new cpu AMD Phenom X4 II, the next generation of desktop processors specifically developed by American producer of desktop systems for the medium high. I even published the first list of online retailers, which we have news on this page.
At the debut, scheduled for January 2009, AMD brings to the market in the first two versions of processor Phenom X4 II motherboards for Socket AM2 +, models II X4 Phenom 940 and Phenom X4 II 920. Only then will be presented the first option Socket AM3, mechanically and electrically compatible with the motherboard Socket AM2 +.
On the left a processor Socket AM3, place compared with a Socket AM2 on the left. Note how the number is below the pin Socket AM3 processor, which lost two points of contact thus maintaining compatibility with Socket AM2 motherboards. The same can not be said for Socket AM

Additional DGP AK Khan confirmed that the CID website was hacked and efforts were on to restore it.
According to Additional DGP (Law and Order) A K Khan the hacking was real but it seems that someone only wanted to prove that our web site could be attacked.
“We have blocked the URL, efforts are on to restore the information and track the hackers. People have to bear the inconvenience till we restore information on the website,” Khan said. He said that the AP police was competent enough to handle cyber crime and the CID personnel were tracking the attacker’s server.
The hackers left messages claiming the attack was in retaliation to the hacking of Pakistan's Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority's (OGRA) web site.

Google API uses unofficial Google
The hypothesis is circulated over the past days between the environment of developers, after which many have noted that this function was inaccessible using official development tools available from Apple.
Although Google has admitted the use of undocumented API, the colossus of Mountain View has strongly denied the use of a proprietary framework, to practice more explicitly prohibited in the development on iPhone. However Google Mobile does not have at present, the requirements to continue to be distributed through AppStore.
It looks at this point a position taken by Apple, which look carefully all developers: if, in fact, Apple would also allow the distribution of Google Mobile is now just as it would in fact not be treated fairly leading developers up in arms.
Pixel Qi Laptop To Run For At Least 20-40 Hours
Jepsen, formerly the head of Intel's display division and chief technology officer at One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), plans to start shipping ultra-low power screens for laptops and e-books in the second half of next year that people can read in direct sunlight and have a fully saturated HDTV-quality color mode.
Low-power screens that can be read in bright sunlight are one of the key features on OLPC's XO laptop. The screens cost a third that of traditional LCD screens and use about a tenth of the power.
"At Pixel Qi, we have a new series of inventions that go well beyond the OLPC screen that we are developing right now," said Jepsen by e-mail. Her company recently opened offices in Taipei and San Francisco after receiving a first round of funding.
More energy efficient screens are critical for mobile devices such as laptops and e-books because screens are among the most power hungry components on such devices.
Pixel Qi plans to develop entire laptop and PC designs around its new screen technology to create the most power efficient models possible.

SMART Introduces New Generation of Interactive
The new 600i system builds on the success of the two previous 600i generations. Network functionality has been added so the system can now be remotely diagnosed and managed, saving users time and reducing costs. It offers a bright, crisp display with true color representation, making all video or still images clearly visible, even from the back of the room. The redesigned projector and boom reduce shadows and glare compared to typical ceiling- or table-mounted projectors, better engaging students and meeting room participants while limiting the amount of light cast toward the teacher or presenter. The extended control panel enables users to plug in peripheral devices such as document cameras, DVD players, laptops, VCRs and other audiovisual equipment. The panel also provides walk-up-and-use control from a single source. Total cost of ownership is lower with a projector bulb that lasts 3,000 hours in standard mode and 4,000 hours in economy mode, an improvement of 50 percent and 33 percent, respectively, over the previous generation’s lamp. The new SMART Board 685i and 680i interactive whiteboard systems will be introduced at BETT 2009 in London, England, January 14–17.
WARP allows DX10 graphics without GPU hardware
Previously, users could still play native Direct3D 10 games such as Crysis with a graphics chipset that is only Direct3D 9-capable but at reduced performance levels. Direct 3D 10Level9 will carry with it a similar penalty. WARP10, however, will enable users with low-performance graphics or even none at all to use the power of the new Core i7 CPUs to bring performance that is on par with that provided by a basic Direct3D 10-level graphics chipset. It should also be capable of anti-aliasing up to 8X in multi-sampling as well as anisotropic filtering.
This reveals that the new Intel chips combined with Windows 7 are particularly powerful, as the CPU is not only capable of rendering such advanced graphics but also of processing its regular tasks. The software's developers didn't envision it to replace graphics hardware completely, however, as the intention is chiefly to allow applications to perform at Direct3D 10 levels without relying on largely different code paths or testing system requirements when running on either dedicated hardware or software.
Intel, Hitachi to develop solid-state drives
Intel and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) said they will "jointly develop and deliver" Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Fibre Channel (FC) solid-state drives (SSDs) for servers, workstations, and storage systems.
While Hitachi is a large supplier of hard disk drives, Intel manufactures and sells consumer and enterprise-class solid-state drives. The enterprise-class X25-E Extreme SSDs that Intel offers now are based on Serial ATA (SATA) technology. As are its consumer-class drives.
Solid-state drives are generally faster than hard-disk drives, particularly at reading data.
"The combination of a leading Enterprise drive supplier with a NAND technology and manufacturing leader will produce world-class solutions in terms of reliability, performance and system compatibility," the companies said in a statement.
The agreement is exclusive to the two companies with the first Serial Attached SCSI and Fibre Channel products expected to be available in early 2010. Both Serial Attached SCSI and Fibre Channel are interfaces typically used in servers.
Microsoft apologizes for Live Search’s Cashback Blackout
Amid heavy volume on Friday, consumers encountered a range of problems from site sluggishness to seeing the wrong amount of cash back show up in their accounts.
The problem was particularly acute with shoppers who were looking to take advantage of a promotion with Hewlett-Packard that offered buyers a 40 percent discount when visiting HP.com through Microsoft's Live Search Cashback. Some shoppers, however, reported seeing only a 3 percent cash back amount posted to their account.
According to the Redmond company, the blackout was generated by a high spike in traffic along with a technical glitch. The Live Search Cashback failure to deliver on a joint Microsoft and HP promotion, which advertised a cashback amount of up to 40%, is standing out among the problems. Customers that got past the outage and the site's crawling performance received only a 3% cashback. Microsoft promised that it would return the proper amounts of money to customers.
Microsoft and Yahoo denies deal rumors
However, both Yahoo and Microsoft have now denied that they are in any such talks at the moment.
The newspaper reported that the deal under discussion would put former AOL CEO Jonathan Miller and Ross Levinsohn, a former president of Fox Interactive Media, in charge of Yahoo. The Times of London, which cited no sources, also said executives at both companies had agreed to the broad terms of a deal.
Microsoft representatives said in a statement: “We continue to offer no comment on such rumors and speculation.”
In fact, there are no current talks between the two companies, an executive at one of the firms who requested anonymity told The Chronicle on Sunday. Furthermore, the $20 billion price cited in the Times of London article for Yahoo's search business appears questionable given that the market capitalization for all of Yahoo is $16 billion.
Yahoo, the Sunnyvale Web portal, and technology giant Microsoft in Redmond, Wash., had had on-again, off-again talks over several months earlier this year about a $47.5 billion takeover, and later a proposal focused only on Yahoo's search business. Discussions regarding both scenarios collapsed without an agreement.

Hard Drive Makers Develop Opal Encryption Standard
unveiled preliminary specifications of three technologies that could
become the future standards for encryption of storage devices, hard
disk to the USB key. Bringing together specialists from storage such
as Seagate, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Samsung, Toshiba, Western Digital, Wave

Gaming industry worth $22 billion in 2008
we're blogging all serious like doesn't mean we don't buy our fair
share of games. We're as responsible for this as you are! How much of
that money do you think belongs to Nintendo?
The ESA was kind enough to break down the data further, showing us
that we spent $11.7 billion on software alone, a 22.9% jump
year-over-year. A lot of the sales, both on the hardware and software
side, can be traced back to December, where consumers spent $5.3
billion, breaking the coveted $5 billion mark in a single month for
the first time.
"While industry growth has not continued at the blistering pace we saw
during the second and third quarters, December's 9 percent increase
over last December brings the year in 19 percent ahead of last year,
and sets a new record for total industry sales," said NPD analyst
Anita Frazier in an e-mail statement.
December marked the first time that the gaming industry's revenue
topped $5 billion in a single month, she noted. In comparison, it took
all of 1997 to hit industry sales of $5.1 billion.
While the Wii, with its easy-to-use motion controller and playful
titles, has been basking in the spotlight since its 2006 launch,
Nintendo's portable DS was the best-selling gaming system in December,
topping 3 million units. The Wii, meanwhile, sold about 2.2 million
units, up roughly 5 percent from November's levels.
Net Neutrality: Google unveils M-Labs
Labs) to enable users to analyze the traffic of their ISP.
On both sides of the world, the lobby of the cultural industry are
trying to put pressure on governments to implement a policy against
piracy. In some countries, one of the first steps is filtering through
the Internet service provider. Thus, at the end of last month,
Australia, Senator Stephen Conroy has decided to implement a series of
tests regulating ISPs. Europe is certainly not immune. The site of
BitTorrent file-sharing is blocked in Sweden and Denmark, TV 2 is the
only player to want to oppose this measure.
Besides piracy, some ISPs are trying to block traffic for their users
to limit their bandwidth charges. By pointing the finger aging
infrastructure and an economic model unsatisfactory, the U.S. cable
operator Comcast, for example, tried to filter the content of users to
prevent the transfer of video.
Faced with these practices, there is the problem of net neutrality, a
concept which is designed to prevent any discriminatory practices on
the network. Among the players supporting net neutrality, Google is
highly engaged with Yahoo! Ebay, Amazon or Microsoft.

For the new generation of "green" servers, the 4Gb DDR3's high density
combined with its lower level of power consumption will not only
provide a reduction in electricity bills, but also a cutback in
installment fees, maintenance fees and repair fees involving power
suppliers and heat-emitting equipment.
"We have leveraged our strength in innovation to develop the first 4Gb
DDR3, in leading the industry to higher DRAM densities," said Kevin
Lee, vice president, technical marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.
"By designing our 4Gb DDR3 using state-of-the-art 50-nm class
technology, we are setting the stage for what ultimately will result
in significant cost-savings, for servers and for the overall computing
market," he added.
The 4Gb DDR3 can be produced in 16 gigabyte (GB) registered dual
in-line memory modules (RDIMM) for servers, as well as 8GB unbuffered
DIMM (UDIMM) for workstations and desktop PCs, and 8GB small outline
DIMM (SODIMM) for laptops. By applying dual-die package technology,
this new device can deliver modules of up to 32GB – offering twice as
much capacity as memory modules based on the previous highest chip
density of 2Gb.
Designed to be low-powered, the 4Gb DDR3 DRAM operates at 1.35 volts
(V), therein improving its throughput by 20 percent over a 1.5V DDR3.
Its maximum speed is 1.6 gigabits per second (Gbps).

Google Launches Measurement Lab
making it easier to measure how ISPs manipulate subscriber Internet
connections, Google chief evangelist Vint Cerf, co-inventor of the
TCP/IP protocol that underlies the Internet, announced Wednesday.
When an Internet application doesn't work as expected or your
connection seems flaky, how can you tell whether there is a problem
caused by your broadband ISP, the application, your PC, or something
else? It can be difficult for experts, let alone average Internet
users, to address this sort of question today.
Last year we asked a small group of academics about ways to advance
network research and provide users with tools to test their broadband
connections. Today Google, the New America Foundation's Open
Technology Institute, the PlanetLab Consortium, and academic
researchers are taking the wraps off of Measurement Lab (M-Lab), an
open platform that researchers can use to deploy Internet measurement
tools.
Researchers are already developing tools that allow users to, among
other things, measure the speed of their connection, run diagnostics,
and attempt to discern if their ISP is blocking or throttling
particular applications. These tools generate and send some data
back-and-forth between the user's computer and a server elsewhere on
the Internet. Unfortunately, researchers lack widely-distributed
servers with ample connectivity. This poses a barrier to the accuracy
and scalability of these tools. Researchers also have trouble sharing
data with one another.

Windows 7 less annoying, but also less secure?
out a "beta" version of Windows early next year.
Windows 7, the forthcoming operating system, will let users choose to
see fewer alerts and warnings from their computers. Rampant
notifications and pop-up windows alerting people to potential security
risks has irked many users of Windows Vista.
"We had all the best intentions of helping to secure the PC platform
even more, particularly for novice PC users who needed to be
protected," said Steven Sinofsky, a senior vice president in
Microsoft's Windows group.
Sinofsky didn't back down from the major changes in Vista responsible
for the rise in alerts, but he did acknowledge that Microsoft needed
to work earlier and more closely with outside companies to avoid a
similar mess in Windows 7.
"Despite the difficult change we introduced, we did move forward the
ecosystem, making it more secure for end users," he said.
With Vista, Microsoft made some significant design changes to the way
windows and icons look, and also to where certain features and
functions are stashed in the system.
Windows 7 keeps some of those changes, but tosses out others. In an
interview, Julie Larson-Green, a Windows vice president, offered one
small example: Microsoft took the "add printer" feature out of the
quick-access Start menu, but after users complained, the company is
putting it back in Windows 7.

Intel : First Xeon Processor with Eight Cores
more quad-core processors are sold, it's only a matter of time before
CPUs with eight cores to be the man. The Intel Core i7 makes it ever
been the beginning, even if it actually has only four cores, but watch
this thread at the same time can edit.
In the desktop market, we can already be happy if the software at all
four cores can benefit, so it certainly will take some time to
octa-core CPUs will reach the market. Anders, on the other hand in the
server segment, as there are significantly more software, which is
adjusted accordingly. They are currently six cores already arrived.
New information about an octa-core derivative of the Xeon server
family is also a PDF document (page 22) are in circulation.
So Intel is on the "IEEE International Solid-State Circuits"
conference, in short (ISSCC), the 8th to 12 Of February, more than the
processor with eight "real" cores tell. According to the official
description, the eight-core processor, thanks to Hyper-Threading with
16 threads bypass can satte 2.3 billion transistors that are in the
45-nm process can be produced. The processor carries the code name
"Beckton" and will have four QPI connections with up to 6.4 GT / s
possess. The processor is placed on the LGA-1567 socket fit.
Because the Xeon processor with eight cores, however, more than three
times as many transistors as the Core i7 desktop part, but only twice
as many computing cores has presumed that, the cache is significantly
increased. From up to 24 MB L3 cache is the speech, but not yet safe.
However, the Beckton-CPU do not seem to be more this year, but appear
only in 2010. Thus, the Xeon-7400-family with four or six CPU cores
the whole year without a major update to stay.
Hitachi, NEC to cut 27,000 jobs
jobs as Japan Inc. buckles under the strain of the global economic
crisis.
NEC Corp. said it was slashing 20,000 jobs worldwide by March 2010 -
half of them regular workers - as it sinks deeper into the red. About
40 percent will be in Japan and the rest overseas, NEC president Kaoru
Yano told a press conference.
Hitachi Ltd. said it would shed up to 7,000 jobs as it forecast a net
loss of 700 billion yen (7.8 billion dollars) in the current financial
year to March. It will try to move full-time workers around within the
company to minimize job losses, company president Kazuo Furukawa said.
"We will take various measures but may not be able to avoid cutting
some regular workers," he said.
NEC announced the job losses after saying it expects a net loss of 290
billion yen (3.2 billion dollars) in the year to March as recessions
in major economies from Japan to Europe and the United States hammer
demand.
"It is regrettable that we have to announce such a big downgrade,"
Yano said. "We must cut waste."
Computer maker Fujitsu Ltd. said its net losses ballooned to 36.1
billion yen (403 million dollars) in the nine months to December, and
forecast it would end the year to March in the red.
"I have absolutely no confidence in the fiscal year 2009," Fujitsu
chief financial officer Kazuhiko Kato told reporters. "I have no clue
what the outlook will be."
Google launches offline mode for Gmail
increasingly reliant on Google's Gmail service then the company's
latest announcement will be very welcome – you'll soon be able to work
with Gmail offline.
This might sound a rather retrograde idea in a connected world but the
point is that with mobility comes a reliance on wireless connections
and if you're a devotee of Gmail's webmail interface, then you'll know
it's useless without a line to the web. But not any more. More after
the cut.
Google is currently rolling out a new Labs feature – Offline Gmail. It
uses Google's Gears technology to download a local cache of your Gmail
folders and contents. If you lose your web connection, Gmail
automatically switches to using this cache, allowing you to continue
working – replying to messages, starring emails for later attention,
applying labels – without concern for when your device will next be
online. When a net connection is once again found, Gmail will
automatically synchronise the local cache with its servers.
The Offline Gmail feature even has a 'flaky connection' mode, which
relies on the local cache most of the time, synching automatically in
the background. In theory, at least, this should speed up everyday use
for those whose net connections are unreliable.
Windows 7, Mac OS make gains
systems accessing the Web.
In its Operating System Market Share report for January, Web metrics
company Net Applications showed the Mac OS at 9.93 percent, up from
9.63 percent in December. The iPhone also trended upward to 0.48
percent in January, from 0.44 percent in December.
January figures from Net Applications on operating system share amid
Internet use.
The biggest winner in January, however, was the iPod touch, whose
"explosive" growth in December continued unabated after the holidays,
growing 37.5% to reach a 0.11% Internet share...That means that more
than one out of every 1,000 Web hits in January were made from iPod
touches -- at least according to Net Applications' data.
Use of Windows 7, meanwhile, surged in January after Microsoft
released the public beta of the operating system, the follow-on to
Windows Vista that's due sometime around the end of 2009. The beta
became available January 10 (though not without some stumbling), up to
which point Windows 7 stood at about 0.04 percent. Through most of the
rest of the month, it fluctuated at between roughly 0.12 percent and
0.15 percent. It closed out the month with a jump to 0.23 percent on
January 31, according to Net Applications' breakout on Windows 7.
Microsoft confirms: no beta 2 for
operating system, planned for two successive beta versions, it does
not go along with his successor, Windows 7, confirmed Friday the
publisher via the blog dedicated this new OS.
Beta 1 of Windows 7 will be directly followed by an RC or Release
Candidate, which will provide a definitive overview of the features of
Windows 7, a few weeks before seem RTM or Release to Manufacturing,
which means that the system is ready to be replicated on a large
scale. It finally pave the way for the final version, called step GA,
or General Availability, which correspond to the commercial launch of
Windows 7.
For now, Microsoft is careful not to give any indication as to the
development schedule, and it is unclear when the RC release of Windows
7.
Quote:
"We are on track, and we are making progress," is limited to the
publisher. "We adopt an approach focused on quality, so as to finalize
the product, and not allow ourselves to be guided by time
constraints."
Netbook Sales are on the Rise, but will that hurt
consumers know what they are getting? And is the PC industry really
benefiting from this wave of new found netbook momentum?
According to leading market research company The NPD Group's retail
tracking service; laptop unit volume increased more than 23 percent in
December to 1.9 million units. That growth was propelled by netbooks.
Without netbooks sales laptop PC growth would have been just 9 percent
in December. For the full year laptop sales growth was 21 percent with
netbooks and 16 percent without them.
Netbook sales ramped up during the year. In the first half of the
year, netbooks accounted for less than 1 percent of laptop sales.
While that number rose in third quarter it remained less than 2
percent. Only in fourth quarter, as products became more available and
began to reach the shelves of the major U.S. retailers, did sales
become significant. By December, netbooks accounted for 12 percent of
unit volume, their highest total of the year. Nearly 50 percent of all
netbook sales for 2008 occurred in December. The impact on overall
laptop ASPs was significant. In January, laptop ASPs were $861, by
December they had fallen to $740. Without netbooks price erosion in
2008 would have been much smaller as non-netbook ASPs were $795 in
December compared to the $861 at the start of the year.
So are netbooks cannibalizing the market or just making a commotion?
"Without netbook sales, the laptop market grew 16 percent in 2008,"
said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "That
16 percent non-netbook growth likely indicates about 50 percent of all
December netbook sales were incremental and about 50 percent were
cannibalistic.
Cyber crime growing
computer security experts have met to discuss the extent of crime and
measures should be adopted to enrailler it. Several experts are there
to Mitchell Baker, president of the Mozilla Foundation, Dave Dewalt,
CEO of McAfee, Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor at Harvard and an
expert on the Internet or even Andre Kudelski as head of the eponymous
firm specializing in digital security.
Each year, it is estimated that the cost of fraud on the Internet
amount to one trillion dollars and according to one expert, in the
year 2008, we have seen more vulnerabilities, over fraud the net and
more malware than usual. In all, the threats of last year were more
numerous than those from 2002 to 2007 combined.
In contrast to what has been observed in the past, these frauds are
not the result of a single genius but rather made by real gangs.
Moreover, in recognizing the new face of cybercrime and its economic
potential, a lawyer would have formed a team of 300 people (experts,
lawyers, hackers ...) to sponsor several operations. One of these
virtual groups would have diverted 25 million financial transactions
directly in Ukraine.
Perhaps even more impressive, one expert says that the year 2008 was
truly the beginning of the cyber-war, especially when tensions between
Russia and Estonia, which saw its saturated networks denial of service
and electrical infrastructure outage. "2008 was the year of cyber-war
and showed that it is possible to make a country vulnerable in a few
minutes [...] it's like a virtual revolution, Russia had embarked on
this path and Other hackers have followed suit, "says one.

IE slips further as Firefox, Safari,
stable IE7, are still losing market share to its "alternative"
competitors. Microsoft has been eager to push IE7 and more recently
IE8, trying to convince people to use the beta browser in an obvious
attempt to keep their dominance from slipping further. It's not
working that well for the software giant as December saw the overall
IE share dip down to below 70%, which is still a big majority
nonetheless.
Some of the recent losses are being attributed to the diminished usage
of Internet Explorer in the workplace. While we've been calling IE to
be broken for years now, typically businesses and institutions adopt
new software more slowly.
The losses IE has suffered amount to around 10% for the whole year and
represent gains across the board for others, namely Firefox, Safari
and Chrome. All three of these browsers have gained in December with
Firefox exceeding 21% and Chrome coming in above 1%. These aren't
localized figures, and we've seen statistics in the past that show
actual usage of browsers can vary wildly by what region of the world
people are in. Another very worthy competitor Opera seems to be flat
in terms of market growth.
Internet Explorer's drop of seven percentage point since February last
year is a continuing trend. Microsoft lost over nine percent of
browser market share in the preceding two years.
Most of IE's drop in the past year has been in Internet Explorer 6,
which fell from 30.63 percent last February to 19.21 percent this
January. Internet Explorer 7 has gained market share overall over the
same time period, rising from 44.03 percent to 47.32 percent.
Computerized voice that actually sounds
indistinguishable from a human.
Computer experts at IBM have invented the technology to be used on
telephone helplines, satellite navigation systems and even on cameras
or iPods. It is so sophisticated that the devices will be able to pause
for effect or cough to attract the users' attention, spelling an end
to the irritating monotone voices that have become a part of everyday
modern life.
The new technology, called "generating paralinguistic phenomena via
markup in text-to-speech syntheses", has only recently been patented.
The software will even be able to react to a situation, telling us to
"shhh" if they are being interrupted or coughing to gain attention.
Google Earth 5.0 launched
feature that enables users of Google Earth to dive beneath the water
surface, explore 3D underwater terrain and browse ocean-related
content contributed by leaders in ocean science and advocacy. The new
version of Google Earth also introduces Historical Imagery, a feature
that enables users to virtually travel back in time through archival
satellite and aerial imagery, Touring, which makes it simple to create
a narrated tour in Google Earth and share it with the world and Google
Mars 3D, which features hi-res imagery and terrain of the red planet.
"With this latest version of Google Earth you can not only zoom into
whatever part of our planet's surface you wish to examine in closer
detail, you can now dive into the world's oceans that cover almost
three-quarters of the planet and discover new wonders that had not
been accessible in previous versions of this magical experience," said
The Honorable Al Gore at this morning's launch event in San Francisco.
"Moreover, with the new historical imagery feature, you can look back
in time and see for yourself the unprecedented pace of change taking
place on the Earth — largely because of human influences. For example,
you can watch the melting of the largest glacier in Glacier National
Park—the Grinnell Glacier—image by image, for the last decade."
"In discussions about climate change, the world's oceans are often
overlooked despite being an integral part of the issue," said Eric
Schmidt, CEO of Google. About one-third of the carbon dioxide that we
emit into the atmosphere ends up in the oceans. Furthermore,
biodiversity loss in our oceans in the next 20-30 years will be
roughly equivalent to losing an entire Amazon rainforest, but this
goes unnoticed because we can't see it. This is why today's launch of
Google Earth 5.0 is so important - it gives us an opportunity to
change everyone's perspective."

Realtek Selects Teradyne UltraWave 12G
Corporation purchased the UltraFLEX™ test system and UltraWave™ 12G
instrumentation equipped with the Embedded Signal Analyzer (ESA)
Toolkit. Realtek, a fabless semiconductor company headquartered in
Hsinchu, Taiwan, will test WLAN 802.11n MIMO with PCI-E
System-On-a-Chip (SOC) devices for laptop and desktop PCs.
The recently introduced ESA Toolkit embeds industry-leading vector
signal analysis software tools and functions into Teradyne's IG-XL™
software, while adding an extensive wireless waveform library covering
more than 20 wireless cellular and connectivity standards. It allows
the same debug tools and measurement algorithms to span design, bench
verification and ATE for easy correlation. Used in conjunction with
the UltraFLEX Background DSP™, the ESA Toolkit also enables full
modulation test in volume multisite production with zero test time
impact for data transfer, computation and datalogging. The ESA Toolkit
is supported and available on the UltraFLEX test system's RF, analog
and digital instruments and is also available for use with off-line
IG-XL workstations.
"The ESA Toolkit sets the standard for modulated signal analysis in
ATE," said Wilson Wang, Realtek deputy director and Testing
Engineering department manager. "Our test engineering group can
effortlessly add key tests such as EVM and Spectral Mask, even for
MIMO device configurations. When product engineering wants to compare
results with the bench equipment, we can now use the same software
environment on UltraFLEX as in the lab."
NetComm says it ‘raises the bar’ with its prototype
broadband communications devices, says it is preparing to launch what
it claims is "the world's first 21Mbps embedded 3G router with all the
bells and whistles" with the looming launch of 21Mbps networks
worldwide.
Showcasing the design of its prototype 21Mbps HSPA+ wireless router
(3G21W) at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week,
NetComm says that with the imminent launch of 21Mbps networks, it is
working with partner company, Sierra Wireless, to launch its prototype
211mpbs mobile broadband router.
NetComm's Managing Director, David Stewart, claimed that "when
launched, it will be the first embedded router of its kind to operate
at 21Mbps using the HSPA+ (evolved high speed packet access) standard,
as well as being a fully-functioning 11n wireless router with four
ethernet ports.
"With this capability, the 3G21W will finally enable the true
potential of this new mobile network
standard, offering possible data speeds equivalent to those of
conventional ADSL2+ connections."
According to Stewart, for carriers currently offering or planning
mobile broadband delivery via a 21Mbps network, routers such as the
new NetComm device will open the way for maximising the customer
experience.
Stewart said the NetComm 3G21W router was being designed a

First information on Ubuntu 9.10
9.10, which will be codenamed Karmic Koala. The developers plan to
bring cloud capabilities to Ubuntu's server edition, boost startup
performance on the desktop, and continue work on the distro's netbook
flavor.
Ubuntu adheres to a time-based six-month release cycle. The next major
release—version 9.04, codenamed Jaunty Jackalope—is moving towards
feature freeze and is scheduled for launch in April. Ubuntu 9.10,
which will be the next release after Jaunty, is planned for October.
The Ubuntu server edition, which was initially launched in 2005, has
been steadily gaining ground in the enterprise, but still lags in
adoption behind competing offerings from Red Hat and Novell.
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has been investing considerable
effort into making Ubuntu a first-class server distro. During the
development cycle for Karmic, Canonical aims to strengthen the server
edition by introducing enhanced support for cloud computing.
One plan is to create a set of standard Ubuntu server Amazon Machine
Image (AMI) profiles that will provide a starting point for creating
specialized images. This will help to simplify deployment of Ubuntu on
Amazon's EC2 platform. The developers also intend to integrate support
for Eucalyptus, an open source framework for implementing a
self-hosted elastic computing cluster. The Eucalyptus project, which
is developed by UCSB, will enable organizations to get many of the
advantages of elastic computing in their own data centers, including
the ability to scale down power consumption when load is low.
"A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go to
sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine
if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that
drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat,
and waking up when there's work to be done," Shuttleworth wrote in a
mailing list post. "No need to drink at the energy fountain when
there's nothing going on. If we get all of this right, our Koala will
help take the edge off the bear market."

Norton now protects children!
now looks for solutions of parental control. To avoid the pitfalls of
any security, the publisher said California seeking a more
comprehensive response to the problem of protecting children on the
internet. To do this, it just created the Norton Family Online
Advisory Council, bringing together doctors, writers and other experts
in the field. This study group aims to develop appropriate tools,
promoting understanding and dialogue between parents and children.
In this regard, Symantec has launched Norton Family Online still in
public beta. This service is currently offered free of charge and
available only in English. Not claiming that a simple inscription on
the site of the publisher, it is composed of an administration
parental line and a control software called Minder Safety to install
on the computer monitor.
Available for Windows and Mac, this utility allows you to remotely
monitor all Internet activities of one or more children. After
creating a profile, more or less stringent will be applied by default
with age. Scalable and customizable, it is possible to moderate in
detail the sites by categories, search filters, the instant messaging
session, access to social groups such as Facebook, but also time spent
on the internet. For added flexibility, the child stuck in these
activities will be encouraged to discuss with his parents and where
appropriate will seek permits on a case by case basis.
Windows XP to Windows 7 upgrades
the upgrade channel for users who will -- probably sooner this year
than later -- be making the switch to Windows 7. Many who had chosen
to steer clear of Windows Vista and hang on to Windows XP -- by all
rights, a decent operating system, at least for Service Pack 3 users
-- are pondering the nightmare scenario of having to upgrade to and
validate (which usually means, pay for) both Vista and Windows 7, if
it so happens that Windows 7 proves to be desirable or simply
necessary.
This led us to thinking: Windows Vista can run without being purchased
and activated, albeit for a limited time (usually 30 days). During
that time, it behaves as though it were a fully operational trial
edition (except for the Ultimate SKU, where several of the "Extras"
aren't available except after validating). But it doesn't take a month
to install an operating system; so what if a valid XP user could
simply borrow the promotional edition of Vista, if you will, to make
the skip over to Windows 7?
You can't download a trial version of Vista any more that runs on a
physical machine; the trial edition now is a pre-configured virtual
hard drive (VHD) that lets you test the applicability of your existing
software in a Virtual PC environment. So you can't make the hop to
Windows 7 via a downloadable version of Vista. And although you can
download a real, physical trial version of Windows Server 2008 (which,
after all, does have the Vista kernel), you can't install it as an
upgrade of Windows XP...just Windows Server 2003.
So it might seem pointless, at first, to say that the first tool you
need to make an XP-to-Win7 upgrade is a copy of Vista. But the key
here is that you don't need to activate Vista after you've upgraded
from XP to Vista, before you begin the upgrade from Vista to Win7.
This could give hope to XP users who do plan to purchase Windows 7;
all they need to do is borrow a friend's legitimate copy of Vista.
we intentionally used a very old, non-updated Windows XP Professional
virtual machine, with only Service Pack 1 installed. But very
importantly, Office 2007 was also installed. Because this was an old
VHD, we had to activate both XP and Office. But doing so at least
ensured us of an antique-like system in good working order, with real
working applications whose settings would need to survive the upgrade
as well. For the heck of it, we attempted a few tricks to see if
Windows Server 2008 could be made to install as an upgrade. Those
tricks failed, but not surprisingly. We also double-checked for the
availability of an evaluation version of Vista. No such version is
officially available from Microsoft's servers at present.
IBM Delivers Software to Ontario Universities
project that gives university students, professors, and other
researchers anytime, anywhere access to some of IBM's leading business
software via cloud computing.
Cloud computing is an emerging compute model for delivering and
consuming IT capabilities as a service. This Tools as a Service (TaaS)
technology showcase, which enables researchers to have 24/7 access to
IBM's WebSphere Integration Developer and Rational Software Architect
over the Internet, is a major milestone for the IBM Canada Centre for
Advanced Studies and its partners in the Centre of Excellence for
Research in Adaptive Systems (CERAS).
Early adopters of this pilot include the University of Waterloo, York
University, Queen's University, University of Toronto, Carleton
University, the Ontario Cancer Institute, and developers from the IBM
Canada software lab.
This Tools as a Service initiative will provide the participating
research institutions with tremendous productivity increases, along
with cost, and energy savings. The researchers will have access to
some of the latest enterprise software securely without needing to
upgrade their own hardware systems or expand their data centers, and
without the need for on-site expertise to install and get the tools
running. TaaS provides the end user with sufficient computing
resources to use the software, regardless of the capability of their
own hardware. TaaS is able to preserve users' data from their last
session and restore it so they can continue from where they left off
with the software tools.
